Is there anyone out there that doesn’t know about the transformation taking place in Playhouse Square right now? If so, head on over to East 14th and Euclid right now and discover all the new additions! Renovations continue to pop up daily as the the beauty of the theaters moves outside.
Even before the beautiful, ornate arches and signage were added to the area and a twenty-foot chandelier (lighting ceremony on May 2) arrived, I’ve always loved visiting Cleveland’s Playhouse Square District. As the country’s largest performing arts center outside of New York, Playhouse Square hosts more than 1,000 events each year, reaching more than one million visitors.
The best thing about the Playhouse Square theaters, at least in my opinion, is that you can buy season tickets for their entire Key Bank Broadway Series for the same price it could cost you for one ticket to a Broadway show in New York City. Clevelanders get to experience the same fabulous theater experience and many of the same shows, for just a fraction of the cost.
So what is this Key Bank Broadway Series I speak of? Each year, there are seven Broadway shows that are selected for our viewing pleasure. As a ticket holder, you select which day of the week you’d like to see the shows and where in the theater you would like to sit (pending availability of course). Ticket prices are based on these two factors, with Smart Seats starting as low as $70 for the entire season! As season ticket holders, you also have the option to swap dates and shows if necessary for no additional cost!
My mom and I have been season ticket holders for the past four seasons. We go on Tuesday evenings for opening night and sit in the first row of the balcony. Our tickets cost $275 for the entire season! We love going on opening night, and it’s a great treat in the middle of the week. We usually grab a bite to eat somewhere downtown and then head over to the show. I love getting dressed up for a night out on the town and our theaters are GORGEOUS! Most shows for the Broadway Series are in the Palace Theatre, which features stunning marble pillars and ornate chandeliers.
Last year over 29,000 people subscribed to the Broadway Series. Will you join that group this year? The shows for the upcoming season include: Motown, Newsies, White Christmas, Pippin, Dirty Dancing, Kinky Boots and Cinderella.
To add to the excitement of the upcoming season, Playhouse Square District has scheduled an official lighting ceremony for May 2nd! The giant chandelier containing over 4,000 crystals will be lit as part of the Dazzle the District event. Festivities start at 5pm on May 2nd and include a live performance by Hot Chelle Rae! See the schedule below!
- 5-8:30 p.m. – Happy Hours! You know how I love a good happy hour and neighborhood restaurants and bars will be open for a “Taste of Playhouse Square” with live music on Star Plaza
- 8:30 p.m. – Hot Chelle Rae concert begins on Euclid Avenue at the University Hospitals Main Stage
- 9:30 p.m. – Drum roll please! The official dazzling of the square is complete with the lighting of the chandelier. Hot Chelle Rae will continue performing after the lighting
And if Playhouse Square wasn’t getting enough local attention, they also appeared in the New York Times this week! Click here to see the fabulous write up about the Playhouse Square District and the Residences at Hanna!
